Research Interests
Shannon Stephens, UAB critical care paramedic, has worked in EMS for more than 25 years. He is currently the executive director of the Center for Injury Science in the Department of Surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Previously he was the director of the Alabama Resuscitation Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UAB and he has been researcher in the UAB School of Medicine since 1998.
Stephens has published several manuscripts and presented nationally and internationally on EMS-related topics including cardiac arrest, severe traumatic injury, prehospital research, advanced airway management and disaster medicine. As an EMS field provider, an EMS educator and an EMS researcher, he has focused his efforts on collaborative clinical trial networks to build a body of evidence to advance and improve prehospital emergency care. Stephens has served as the National Coordinating Center director for several NIH- and DOD-funded clinical trial networks, and he actively serves on several national, state and local committees. He is also a member of the American Heart Association, the Project Management Institute, the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services and the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians.
