A clinical trial is the scientific investigation of a new treatment that has shown benefit in animal or laboratory studies, but has not yet been proven safe and effective in humans.
In the trial, participants receive interventions outlined by a research plan (protocol) created by trained investigators. These interventions may be therapeutic products such as drugs or devices, procedures, or behavior changes such as diet. Trials may compare new therapeutics to already existing ones, to a product with no active ingredients (placebo), or to nothing else at all. Since the intervention being tested is unknown as to whether it will be helpful or not, there are no guarantees a participant’s condition will improve. The investigators try to determine if the new intervention is safe and effective by measuring certain outcomes related to the condition being treated.
UAB researchers conduct a wide range of clinical trials to determine whether new therapies are safe and effective in treating people with a variety of conditions. See if there is a clinical trial right for you.
