Welcome to UAB HSF Global Health Fellowship!
We are thrilled that you are considering a career in global health. This unique fellowship was created to equip you with practical skills that will allow you to effectively practice medicine anywhere in the world.
During the course of this fellowship, you will have the opportunity to attend the prestigious Gorgas Institute of Tropical Medicine in Lima, Peru, where you will learn from renowned global health and tropical medicine leaders. Your rotations will be in Lima, Cusco, and the Amazon. During these rotations you will learn about a variety of diseases, including: anthrax, bartonellosis, brucellosis, chancroid, cholera, leptospirosis, leprosy, HTLV-1, HIV, viral hepatitis, yellow fever, rabies, malaria, leishmaniasis, Chagas’ disease, cyclosporiasis, strongyloidiasis, cysticercosis, echinococcosis, paragonimiasis, fascioliasis, histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, snake bites, spider bites, and many other illnesses relevant to tropical medicine. Lectures will be in English and you will use interpreters to communicate with patients in the clinical setting.
Because of the significant amount of time that you will spend living in Peru, we have designed a 4-week Spanish immersion course in Managua, Nicaragua, where you will have a Spanish tutor for 4-8 hours a day Monday through Friday. During this rotation, you will live with a Nicaraguan family and will have the opportunity to teach preventive medicine to the people of the rural community of Cedro Galan as well as tutor the Nicaraguan medical students on medical topics of your choice.
When you return from your Gorgas rotation in Peru, you will also attend the Harvard Humanitarian Response Intensive Course that will teach you how to respond to humanitarian crises through lectures and simulations. Simulations include wilderness camping.
At the end of the year, you will put all of your learning into practice by working as a tropical medicine attending for a month at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya.
When you are not traveling, you will be spending your time working as a hospitalist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. You will have the opportunity to rotate through many of our floors/services including the observation unit, the cardio-hospitalist unit, geriatrics unit, step-down unit, consult team, and procedure team. During your hospitalist months, we will schedule your procedure, ultrasound and wound care training as well as global health lectures and journal club.
Our hope through this fellowship is to give you a very hands-on and immersive experience that will mold you into an effective global health physician.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the fellowship or if you would like to partner with us in any of our global health projects.
We are excited about the possibility of working with you.
Sincerely,
Jill Aragón Neely, MD, CTropMed®
