The Department of Medicine (DOM) is dedicated to promoting and supporting innovative research conducted by its talented investigators. To achieve this goal, the DOM offers a variety of awards to recognize and reward excellence in research. These awards serve to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our scientists, as well as to promote their work and bring attention to their important contributions to the field. Through these awards, the department encourages continued growth and innovation in medical science.
The Walter B. Frommeyer, Jr., Fellowship in Investigative Medicine is an annual research award designed to foster the development of outstanding physician-scientists by supporting a two-year intensive, mentored research experience. Dr. Frommeyer served as a teacher, investigator, clinician, and administrator at UAB for more than two decades.

The J. Edwin Blalock PhD Career Development Award, named in honor of renowned UAB pulmonary scientist Dr. Ed Blalock, is supported by the Department of Medicine and the DREAM Council to develop outstanding junior research PhD scientists by supporting up to two years of mentored research that facilitate transition into independent scientists.

The Max Cooper Award for Career Excellence in Research is named in honor of Dr. Max D. Cooper to recognize outstanding research achievements by Department of Medicine faculty. The Max Cooper Award is presented annually to faculty with a primary appointment in the Department of Medicine at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. This award recognizes researchers who have achieved national recognition for significant scientific discoveries over the course of their careers.

The Koopman Medical Student Research Excellence Award honors Dr. William J. Koopman, Distinguished Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Medicine, renowned for his groundbreaking work on synovial tissue and autoantibodies in rheumatoid arthritis. Medical students interested in health-related research are encouraged to apply for this prestigious eight-week summer internship program. Participants will work with a research mentor holding a primary or secondary appointment in the Department of Medicine.
The Department of Medicine Jennifer Pollock Trainee Travel Award provides trainees with supplemental costs associated with attending and presenting his/her scholarly work at prestigious national or international conferences. Applications for the Jennifer Pollock Trainee Travel Award are accepted on a rolling basis. Submit materials to domresearch@uabmc.edu.
