Elizabeth A. (Lisa) Jackson, MD, FACC, FAHA, will serve as the Interim Director for the UAB Division of Cardiovascular Disease, effective September 1. She will succeed Dr. Sumanth Prabhu, who has led the Division with distinction over the past decade to capture national recognition and achieve regional dominance.
As Interim Director, Dr. Jackson will work closely with Dr. Prabhu, Interim Co-Division Director for Basic Science Dr. Martin Young, Vice Director for Clinical Programs Dr. Gil Perry, CVD Section Chiefs, Division Administrator Sam Boadu, and others to provide collaborative leadership for the next 12 months while a permanent Division Director is identified through a national search.
Dr. Jackson is Professor of Medicine and the inaugural holder of the Robert C. Bourge and Cutessa D. Bourge Endowed Professorship in Cardiovascular Disease. She also directs the Division’s Cardiovascular Outcomes and Effectiveness Research Program.
Nationally recognized for her expertise in eHealth, cardiovascular prevention, behavioral interventions, and women’s heart health, Dr. Jackson is Chair for the American Heart Association’s Committee on Social Determinants of Health, and Vice Chair for the AHA Council on Quality of Care and Outcomes Research. She has been an editorial board member of ACC.org, and she is currently on the editorial board for Circulation’s Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes Journal.
Her career demonstrates an extraordinary ability to build bridges across divisions, departments, and schools in an academic setting. From her first job performing electrocardiograms at a Boston hospital, to writing a practical guide for women on how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, Dr. Jackson has excelled in identifying and overcoming barriers to cardiology training and care.
Her current clinical footprint includes attending on UAB’s Cardiology Consultation Service and in the CCU at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. Her work in cardiovascular prevention and women's health and has been continuously funded by NIH since 2004. She has served on NIH study section since 2005 and has reviewed for National Science Foundation.
Dr. Jackson received her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and her MPH from Harvard University. She came to UAB in April of 2018 after 11 years at the University of Michigan where she was the Associate Director of the Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program (MCORRP), and Director of the Women’s Heart Program.
