J. Martin Rodriguez, MD, FACP, FIPSA, will serve as the Director of our Division of Infectious Diseases, effective September 1, 2024. Currently the Paul W. Burleson, MD, Endowed Professor of Medicine, he will be recommended for appointment to the C. Glenn Cobbs Endowed Chair of Medicine in his new role.
Rodriguez is known and loved at UAB as an esteemed physician, teacher, and leader. He currently serves as Interim Director of the division and has served as its Director of Clinical Activities since 2016. During the last year, he has led research-intensive faculty with the largest research program in the department while also developing new clinical programs to meet the needs of UAB Medicine.
A graduate of Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Rodriguez trained in Internal Medicine and served as Chief Medical Resident at UAB before training in Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He joined our faculty in 2005 and subsequently directed the Tinsley Harrison Clinical Scholars (teaching) Service, the Travel Clinic, and the Infectious Diseases Clinic. He is also the Physician for Adults in the UAB Undiagnosed Diseases Program.
Rodriguez has led the most popular clinical case conference in the department, “Tinsley Conference,” for over a decade. He has won the Outstanding Teaching Award and the C. Glenn Cobbs/Edwin A. Rutsky Award for Clinical Excellence in every year since 2010. In 2023, he received the UAB President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. An expert in management of refractory or recurrent Clostridioides difficile colitis, he is widely known as a preeminent diagnostician.
