Martin Rodriguez, M.D., is the Interim Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases (ID), effective September 24, 2023.
Dr. Rodriguez is the Paul W. Burleson, M.D., Endowed Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Activities in the Division. An outstanding teacher and physician, he has received many awards including the 2023 President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also plays other key roles including Co-director of the UAB Undiagnosed Diseases Program and Director of the Tinsley Harrison General Medicine Service.
Dr. Rodriguez is a dynamic leader who will lead a team of senior advisors in the division that includes Paul Goepfert, M.D., professor of medicine and director for the Alabama Vaccine Research Clinic, and Craig Hoesley, M.D., professor of medicine, senior associate dean for medical education and chair of the Department Medical Education.
Dr. Rodriguez received his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima, Peru in 1998. He trained at UAB as an Internal Medicine Resident and Chief Resident, then completed a fellowship in Infectious Diseases and an additional year of HIV fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University. He has served on the faculty at UAB since 2005.
As Interim Division Director, Dr. Rodriguez will maintain ID’s welcoming culture and its terrific programs in patient care, education, and research. The Department of Medicine has launched a national search for a permanent division director.
