Steve Rowe, M.D., MSPH, has accepted the position of Chief Scientific Officer for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - the world's leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis - effective July 1, 2022.
Dr. Rowe currently holds the The Nancy R. and Eugene C. Gwaltney Family Endowed Chair in Medical Research as Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine; and he directs the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center here at UAB. This prestigious appointment is a testimony to Dr. Rowe's many groundbreaking contributions to the field of CF research.
As the CF Foundation's Chief Scientific Officer, he will oversee the direction and execution of their core scientific strategy which aims to find a cure for all patients with cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support.
While this appointment will catalyze significant changes in the Division and Center, Dr. Rowe remains deeply committed to the research mission at UAB. He will retain a UAB appointment, maintain a number of his projects, and continue to live in Birmingham. In addition, the CFF has made a substantial commitment to UAB that will help us invest in new and existing faculty and to recruit a new CF Research Center Director.
