The Federal Communications Commission has awarded UAB funding to facilitate the telehealth transition that occurred during the onset of the COVID-19 public health emergency. As a part of the CARES Act, the monies will help UAB purchase equipment such as iPads, webcams, and other devices, to expand care to populations with little access and to improve remote patient monitoring efforts. Jeonga Kim, PhD (Associate Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) and colleagues have demonstrated that a novel small molecule designed to treat and prevent metabolic diseases can effectively prevent and reverse diet-induced weight gain, glucose intolerance, and improve the insulin sensitivity in animal models.
Jessy Deshane, PhD (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) and colleagues developed a tissue-engineered, three-dimensional breast cancer mimetic system to study how expansion stress impacts the tumor microenvironment, demonstrating that stress can lead to dangerous acceleration of the disease.
Jori May, MD (Fellow, Hematology and Oncology) recently first-authored an article outlining a practical approach to treating patients with unexplained arterial thrombosis. The publication highlights diagnostic guidance and discusses patient cases to demonstrate common management considerations. Kudos, Dr. May!
Miranda Curtiss, MD (Instructor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) has received a 2020 American Lung Association/American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, Immunology Award award to study the contribution of Chi3l1 (chitinase 3-like-1) in a preclinical asthma model and the mechanisms by which it contributes to allergic asthma.
Hind Lal, PhD (Associate Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) has been appointed to the NIH Study Section for Myocardial Ischemia and Metabolism (MIM). In this role he will review applications involving basic and applied aspects of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion, coronary circulation, and myocardial metabolism. Congrats, Dr. Lal!
