More Good News for October 8, 2021

Jeffrey Shen (PGY3) is the recipient of the 2021 Argus Award for Best Resident Educator on the Birmingham Campus for the second consecutive year. The award is given by medical students to honor the best examples of educators and mentors in the classroom and clinical setting. Kudos, Dr. Shen!

Jim Raper, Ph.D., CRNP, (Professor, Infectious Diseases) has received the Distinguished Citizen Award from Kent State University in recognition of his work with UAB’s 1917 Clinic. The award honors Kent State graduates whose service enriches the lives of others and betters their community.

Jodie Dionne-Odom, M.D., MSPH (Professor, Infectious Diseases) and colleagues have been selected by the Center for Women’s Reproductive Health to receive a multidisciplinary pilot grant to study treatment options that may prevent pregnant women from passing syphilis to their children.

David Moore, RPSGT, chief polysomnographic technologist in the Sleep/Wake Disorders Clinic, recently became fully certified in the Inspire Care Pathway, best practices that guide use of the upper airway stimulation device that treats sleep apnea. He is the first in the world to receive this certification.

Hiafa (Saba) Alsharif, M.S., (Doctoral Student, Bhatnagar Lab) was invited to speak at the 2021 American Diabetes Association Virtual Scientific Sessions Rising Stars of Diabetes Research. She presented, "The Role of BA13 Adhesion G-Protein Coupled Receptor in Insulin Secretion and Glucose Tolerance." Congrats, Saba!

We welcome Gretchen Wells, M.D., as a new professor in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease. She is a general cardiologist and national academic leader in clinical cardiology. Her areas of interest include coronary microvascular disease, psychological attributes contributing to cardiovascular disease outcomes, and heart failure in women.

Nichole J. Brandt, PharmD, MBA, Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland, will present the Annual Geerts Lecture "Aligning Priorities and What Matters to Older Adults: Focus on Medications and Public Priorities" at noon on Wednesday, October 13, via Zoom.
