Pankaj Arora, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received the 2019 UAB Heersink School of Medicine Pittman Scholar Award. Dr. Arora’s lab focuses on the role of natriuretic peptide signaling in cardiometabolic disease. Congrats, Dr. Arora!
More Good News for January 30, 2019
In a JCI Insight study, Anupam Agarwal, MD (Professor and Director, Nephrology) and colleagues have found that kidney-resident macrophages are reprogrammed to a developmental state in a mouse model of acute kidney injury (AKI). This reprogramming during AKI may be important to promote healing and tissue regeneration. If a similar developmental shift is seen for human kidney-resident macrophages during AKI, that could lead to new therapeutic approaches for patients.
Randall Davis, MD (Professor, Hematology and Oncology) was co-senior author on a study that found certain expression patterns on tumor cells could indicate whether the patient’s immune system would fail to respond to checkpoint inhibitors—drugs that block proteins made by immune system cells—ultimately cancelling the immune system’s response to fight off cancer.
Latesha Elopre, MD, MSPH (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) has been named director of Diversity and Inclusion for Graduate Medical Education in the UAB School of Medicine. In this new role, her responsibilities will include providing strategic leadership for diversity and inclusion in SOM Graduate Medical Education. Congrats Dr. Elopre!
Navin Nanda, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was Editor-in-Chief of a first edition cardiology textbook titled "Advances in Clinical Cardiovascular Imaging, Echocardiography and Interventions.” Keep up the good work, Dr. Nanda!
