UAB Hospital recently reported the lowest number of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 since March 2020. Experts attribute the decrease in cases to availability of the vaccine. With only 31.9 percent of Alabama’s population fully vaccinated, physicians warn that future infections may rise as more severe strains of COVID-19 emerge.

Sumanth Prabhu, M.D. (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) has been named the 2022 recipient of the Robert M. Berne Distinguished Lectureship by the American Physiological Society, an award that recognizes a leader who is making great strides towards the growth of cardiovascular research. Dr. Prabhu will give his lecture at the 2022 Experimental Biology meeting.
The Live HealthSmart Alabama initiative to advance healthy eating, physical activity and wellness in underserved neighborhoods, has completed phase one of improvements in Birmingham’s Kingston neighborhood. Led by Mona Fouad, MD, MPH, the program now aims to improve food disparities prevalent in the neighborhood.
