Andrea Cherrington, M.D., MPH, will serve as the inaugural director of the new Division of General Internal Medicine and Population Science, effective Oct. 1, 2024. Since 2013, Cherrington has served as the medical director for the Diabetes Clinic at Cooper Green Mercy Health Services, established UAB's Clinical and Population Health Sciences Program, and served as the principal investigator on the $21 million NIMHD P50 grant, Deep South Center to Reduce Disparities in Chronic Diseases, now known as the Forge Ahead Center. She has led the Division of Preventive Medicine as Interim Director for over a year, and she will lead that division as it merges with the Division of General Internal Medicine to launch the new GIMPOP division, uniting the two divisions for a threefold mission of excellence. Congratulations, Dr. Cherrington!

Seth Landefeld, M.D., concluded his service as Department Chair after twelve years. We celebrate the many accomplishments of his leadership tenure and wish him well in his next endeavor. Mark Dransfield, M.D., will serve as Interim Chair, effective September 1.
Lal Investigates Cardiac Damage Following Pneumococcal Disease
Hind Lal, Ph.D., (Assoc. Professor, CVD) received an RO1 from the National Institutes of Health to identify strategies that mitigate cardiac damage and dysfunction following invasive pneumococcal disease.

CVD Enhances Patient Care with New MRI Machine
Last week, the Division of Cardiovascular Disease celebrated the installation of a new cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The non-invasive diagnostic tool offers enhanced image quality, faster scanning, and improved air quality technology. The upgraded system enables cardiovascular staff to provide more efficient and comfortable care to patients.
