David Clabough, Information Systems Specialist II in the Division of Preventive Medicine, is the recipient of the Summer 2024 DOM STAR Award for Staff Excellence. Clabough received overwhelming support from his colleagues who highlighted his calm, kind, and professional demeanor. UABHS Acquires Ascension St. Vincent's Health System
The UA System Board of Trustees has approved an agreement for UAB Health System Authority to assume ownership of Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System. The transition is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024, pending regulatory approvals and satisfaction of closing conditions. Both entities will continue normal operations while their teams collaborate to plan the transition.
UAB Expands Tele-ICU in Demopolis
Steve Stigler, M.D., (Professor, PACCM) Medical Director of UAB eMedicine Critical Care led the launch of the Tele-Intensive Care Unit Expanded Hospital, a collaborative initiative between UAB and Whitfield Regional Hospital to provide 24-hour Tele-ICU services, giving patients access to critical care closer to home.
Payne to Lead Women's Health Track
Brittany Payne, M.D., (Assistant Professor, GIM) was named the new director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program's Women's Health Track, effective July 1. The program equips trainees to provide specialized care in an ambulatory setting through clinical experiences, structured curricula, and robust mentorship.
FDA Approves Newly Developed Pneumococcal Vaccine
The lab of Moon Nahm, M.D., (Prof. Emeritus, PACCM) recently celebrated the FDA's approval of CAPVAXIVE — a pneumococcal vaccine designed to protect older adults against the serotypes that causes many cases of invasive pneumococcal disease. Nahm's lab played a critical role in the development of the vaccine.
Nellore Earns ALA Emerging Respiratory Pathogens Award
Anoma Nellore, M.D., (Associate Professor, ID) was awarded the American Lung Association Emerging Respiratory Pathogens Award to develop a novel model system that evaluates the immune's response to respiratory pathogens in human lungs.
Gravett, Watts Accepted to Forge AHEAD Scholars Cohort
Department of Medicine Assistant Professors Matt Gravett, M.D., (ID) and Kristen Allen Watts, Ph.D., MPH, (Preventive Medicine) were accepted into the Forge AHEAD Center Scholars cohort to advance their research that focuses on HIV prevention and management in the Deep South.
Vachhani Reports Results of Ponatinib vs. Imatinib in JAMA
Pankit Vachhani, M.D., (Assoc. Professor, HemOnc) and colleagues conducted a randomized clinical trial that compared the efficacy and safety of ponatinib versus imatinib in adults with newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
