Chad Hunter, Ph.D., (Associate Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism) has received a third RO1 grant. His lab will investigate how interactions between a pancreatic transcriptional regulator Islet-1 and epigenetic modifiers Rnf20/Rnf40 control embryonic development and adult function of insulin-producing beta-cells. Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism fellow, Fernando Bril, M.D., and colleagues were published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism for a study that finds mass spectrometry is a noninvasive strategy to accurately measure fasting intact insulin levels and predict the presence of NAFLD.
Cardiovascular Disease fellow, Vibhu Parcha, M.D., received the first place Southern Society of Clinical Investigation Young Investigator Award for his abstract "Association of Transthyretin Val122Ile Variant with Incident Heart Failure and Mortality Among Black Americans: Insights from the REGARDS Study.” Kudos, Dr. Parcha!
Win Williams, M.D., (Associate Professor, General Internal Medicine) has received renewal of his training grant from the Department of Veteran Affairs. The Chief Resident in Quality and Safety program provides mentorship and participation in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the BVAMC.
Gaurav Jain, M.D., (Associate Professor, Nephrology) was featured in a recent CMS Spotlight where he discussed his work in preparing to launch the Kidney Care Choice Model at UAB—an initiative that will develop strategies to improve access to patient-centered, high-quality care and mental health resources for patients with advanced kidney disease.
