The Division of Hematology and Oncology and the Department of Dermatology are proud to announce a Multidisciplinary Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma Clinic which offers personalized diagnostic and treatment options for Mycosis Fungoides (MF), Sezary Syndrome (SS) and other cutaneous T and B cell Lymphomas. The clinical team designs individualized treatment plans, including options for enrolling in clinical trials. The clinic is located on 2nd floor of The Kirklin Clinic and operates every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month.

Cancer affects different populations differently, and minority groups in the United States continue to bear a disproportionate cancer burden. To raise awareness of this health disparity, the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted a Minority Cancer Awareness Week Expo in UAB Hospital North Pavilion, 2nd Floor on Monday, April 9, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Other events will follow throughout the month.

Beatriz Hanaoka, MD (Assistant Professor, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) and her husband, Prabha Nagareddy, PhD, MSc (Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition Sciences) have been published in the European Heart Journal. Their findings demonstrate how systemic inflammation may be promoting plaque build-up by altering cellular cholesterol metabolism.

Steven Duncan, MD (Professor) and Mark Dransfield, MD (Professor) in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care, were awarded a $400,000 grant from GlaxoSmithKline to study the effects of belumimab (Benlysta) in emphysema patients. By blocking a growth factor for B-cells, they expect this treatment to decrease autoantibody production and halt progression of atherosclerosis (and/or emphysema) in these patients.
