This week, the Department of Medicine Chair's Office moved to the 12th floor of the Faculty Office Tower as its new home base. This is just one of 25 DOM space improvement projects precipitated by construction of the new Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences building which will also house the Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center. Of our 11 divisions, 10 have been involved in renovations and relocations in the past 18 months. Here's to everyone who has packed their offices, labs and clinics into boxes and bravely traded spaces! The hard work will ultimately lead us to workspace that makes us all proud.

Miranda Curtiss, M.D., Ph.D., (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) discusses highly effective ways that patients with asthma can manage, minimize, and prevent seasonal allergic outbreaks.

Richard Kennedy, Ph.D., (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) received the 2022 Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Outstanding Academic Mentor Award for his outstanding mentorship to graduate students Margaret Lloyd and Malik Seals. Congratulations!

Surya Bhatt, M.D., (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) responds to the recent USPSTF updated recommendation on screening patients for COPD, noting a substantial rationale to find additional ways to enhance earlier detection of this condition.

We are pleased to welcome Assistant Professor Julienne (Julie) Carstens, Ph.D., (Hematology and Oncology) to UAB. Her research will focus on understanding tumor biology to develop translational targets for pancreatic cancer. Glad to have you, Dr. Carstens!
