In the spirit of the holidays, Department of Medicine staff gave the gift of time as volunteers to the UAB Blazer Kitchen — a program which provides healthy food and resources for patients, students, and staff who experience food insecurity. The team helped stock the pantry with much needed food items and toiletries, and they encourage other teams to consider taking part in making a difference in our community.

The UA System Board of Trustees appointed Renee Heffron, Ph.D., to the Jim Straley Endowed Chair in AIDS Research, and Surya Bhatt, M.D., as the holder of the Endowed Professorship in Airways Disease. Congrats to you both!
Carrie Howell, Ph.D., (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) received a K01 to assess the impact of including social determinants of health to a validated diabetes risk prediction model. Findings will inform future assessments and delivery of prevention programs.
The Infectious Diseases Society of America renewed UAB’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, led by Joshua Stripling, M.D., (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) as a Center of Excellence in recognition of its integration of best practices in antimicrobial stewardship.
Anath Shalev, M.D., (Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism) joined UAB MedCast to highlight the benefits of multidisciplinary research in creating new therapies at the UAB Comprehensive Diabetes Center.
CVD fellow Naman Shetty, M.D., received the American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin Young Investigator Award for his project "Sex Differences in the Association of Multi-Ethnic Genome-Wide Blood Pressure Polygenic Risk Score with Hypertension."
