Joshua Speed, PhD (Nephrology) just received a $1 million K99/R00 award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for his project, “Endothelin--Mechanisms in Hypertension and Obesity.” His mentor is David Pollock, PhD.

Qiana Matthews, PhD (Infectious Diseases) recently received a grant from the The Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt, a tropical medicine institute at Cayetano Heredia University in Lima, Peru. The Institute has ongoing investigations in tuberculosis, leishmaniasis, malaria and HIV.

Jeffrey Curtis, MD, MS, MPH (Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) was recently appointed to the FDA’s Arthritis Advisory Committee.

Ravi Bhatia, MD (Director, Hematology and Oncology) will chair the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Translational Research Projects Study Section.

The UAB Faculty Development Grant Program provides money for research, teaching and service related projects. Applicants must have a full-time UAB faculty appointment, and they must secure matching funds from their department and/or school. Applications are due by midnight, Monday, February 15, 2016. 

All DOM faculty involved in clinical teaching are encouraged to attend the next Tinsley Harrison Scholars Faculty Development Sessions, “Using Questions to Enhance Learning” presented by Lisa Willett, MD, and J.R. Hartig, MD.
