GIM Merger The Heersink School of Medicine has welcomed 62 volunteers across 27 fields to its Learning Communities Housestaff Mentors team. Housestaff provide near-peer mentorship and a safe space for medical students to openly discuss their perspectives, opinions, and experiences while navigating medical school. Thirteen DOM internal medicine residents were selected for the program.

Welner Co-Leads O'Neal CB&I Research Program

Robert Welner, Ph.D., MS, (Associate Professor, Hem/Onc) will co-lead the UAB O'Neal Cancer Biology and Immunology Research Program, effective August 1. The program aims to identify mechanisms governing cancer cell biology to develop novel therapeutic approaches. Congrats, Dr. Welner!

Basu Finds ctDNA May Predict Bladder Cancer Recurrence

In a retrospective analysis, Arnab Basu, M.D., MPH, (Asst.Professor, HemOnc) found that patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer who had detectable circulating tumor DNA before radical cystectomy had shorter disease-free survival and higher recurrence rates.

DOM Specialties Highly Ranked in USNWR

Four DOM specialties were ranked in the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Top 50: Rheumatology (10), Hematology & Oncology (40), Geriatrics (45), and Cardiology (50). Pulmonary, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, were classified as high-performing.

Stone Pilots NAM Addiction Med Curriculum in Med-Peds

Addiction Medicine Fellow Hannah Stone, M.D., will participate in the National Academy of Medicine's Action Collaborative on Combatting Substance Use and Opioid Crises Core Competency Implementation Pilot to implement substance prevention, diagnosis, and treatment curriculum into the Medicine-Pediatrics residency program.

Lin Joins Division of GGPC

Dr. Lin is dedicated to understanding and improving health outcomes in aging populations. She specializes in lifestyle interventions, wearable devices, physical function, and cardiovascular health.
