More Good News for June 20, 2018
Tiffany Carson, PhD (Assistant Professor, Preventive Medicine) recently published two manuscripts that will help advance our understanding of the human microbiome. The first, published in Neonatology, is a review paper on how the neonatal microbiome may partially explain the relationship between Cesarean section and adverse pediatric health. The second manuscript can be found in Psychosomatic Medicine and reports the findings of a pilot study led by Dr. Carson that examined racial differences in the gut microbiota of black and white females.
Shane Wiley, MBA (Administrative Director, Cardiovascular Disease) will serve as the Interim Executive Administrator for the Department of Medicine effective July 1, when Jason Daniel, MBA, will become Vice President for the UA Health Services Foundation and Senior Executive Administrator for the School of Medicine. Shane has done an exemplary job in his current role, which he will continue while serving as Interim Executive Administrator for approximately four months during the search for the next Executive Administrator.
Andre Ballesteros-Tato, PhD (Assistant Professor) and John Mountz, MD, PhD (Professor) in Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology are both recipients of grants from the Lupus Research Alliance to explore lupus from many perspectives—from uncovering root causes of lupus to developing targeted therapies for this complex disease.
The SOM Office for Diversity and Inclusion Summer Newsletter highlighted one of our best and brightest this week—Latesha Elopre, MD, MSPH (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases). The feature includes Dr. Elopre's personal background and the many influences that shaped her thriving academic medical career.
Gerald Belopolsky, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) recently received the Jack Durand Fulmer, MD, Award for Excellence in Teaching for 2018. Dr. Belopolsky was recognized by the Pulmonary fellows for his broad knowledge of pulmonary and critical care medicine, his practical approach to patient care, and for his availability to discuss challenging cases and provide instruction. Dr. Jack Fulmer (now deceased) was a long-time UAB pulmonologist who served as a role model for trainees for decades during his tenure at UAB.
Jennifer Trevor, MD (Assistant Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) was elected to the Executive Committee of the Council of Chapter Representatives of the American Thoracic Society for the 2018-2019 term. As a representative, Dr. Trevor will be involved in a wide array of activities—from providing education for medical professionals to promoting awareness and the value of chapter initiatives—that help fulfill the Society's mission to understand, prevent, and ultimately eliminate lung disease worldwide. Congratulations, Dr. Trevor!
Under the direction of Michael Birrer, MD, PhD (Professor, Hematology and Oncology) the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center has partnered with 69 other National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers to issue a statement urging for increased HPV vaccination and screening to eliminate HPV-related cancers, starting with cervical cancer. This is the third year that all NCI-designated cancer centers have come together to issue a national call to action.

The two-day update in cardiovascular disease will feature keynotes from Thomas J. Wang, MD, Physician-in-Chief at Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute, and Douglas L.
