Kondal Kyanam Kondal Kyanam, M.D., will serve as Interim Director for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, effective July 1, 2024, when Douglas R. Morgan, M.D., M.P.H., will step down as Division Director and become Director of Global Health Programs for the division.


Good News for June 14, 2024

An effective and seasoned leader, Dr. Kyanam is Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Endoscopy at UAB Medicine, Director for Advanced Endoscopy at the BVAMC and Director of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship. Since joining UAB, Dr. Kyanam has leveraged his procedural expertise in general and advanced endoscopy to improve the efficiency, throughput, safety and quality of our endoscopy programs. He led the expansion of the endoscopy suites on JT6, trained faculty in new procedures, and recruited faculty to accommodate the needs of patients with cancer, liver transplant patients, and other patients with digestive diseases. The Department welcomes him to this new role.

The Department is deeply grateful to Dr. Morgan for his service to the division over the past six years, in which he dramatically increased the diversity of the division, bringing women and URiM faculty and fellows to a field in which they have been underrepresented. He grew innovative programs to treat digestive disease, partnered with Cooper Green Mercy Health Services in an innovative program to address health disparities, and laid a foundation for a new Funds Flow clinical compensation model to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and fellows who will lead programs to meet the needs of Alabama and the Deep South.

Jamy Reports Vedolizumab's Efficacy in Preventing aGVHD

In Nature Medicine, Omer Jamy, M.D., (Assoc. Prof., HemOnc) and colleagues find that adding Vedolizumab to standard preventive therapy reduces the incidence of intestinal acute graft-versus-host disease in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Nanda Directs International Conference on Echocardiography

Navin Nanda, M.D., (Distinguished Professor, CVD) directed the 36th International Conference on Echocardiography and Allied Techniques where over fifty presenters shared unique case studies.

Morgan Selected as Fellow Consultant of the Year
