2017 Camp Dismukes RetreatThe IM Residents turned out in droves despite the cold temperatures for the annual Camp Dismukes Retreat at Oak Mountain State Park. The entire training program was provided coverage so that residents and their families could enjoy the afternoon together.

 

More Good News for November 1, 2017

We are delighted to report that the 33 residents who took their ABIM Board Certification Exams achieved a 100% pass rate!

The Department is delighted to report that we recently helped a patient survive acute respiratory failure with alveolar hemorrhage, thanks to the novel treatment Steve Duncan, MD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) is exploring for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis patients using plasma exchange, rituxamab, and intravenous immunoglobulin. We salute Dr. Duncan and the entire pulmonary care team—Keith Wille, MD; Vincent Valentine, MD; and Victoria Rusanov, MD, PhD—who helped this patient make a dramatic recovery.

Kondal Kyanam, MD (Associate Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) has been elected as a fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy in honor of his contributions to the field of endoscopy.

Rodney Tucker, MD (Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has been elected to a second term as Director-At-Large for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, a society comprised of over 5,000 physicians, nurses, and health professionals who serve in the hospice and palliative medicine specialty.

Gaurav Jain, MD, UAB Associate Professor of Nephrology and UABHS Associate Patient Experience Officer, will moderate a panel discussion on "The Patient as a Partner: Batman and Robin" at noon on Wednesday, November 8, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

The Center for AIDS Research is hosting a World AIDS Day Celebration on Thursday, December 7, at the Doubletree Hotel, with a Lunch Seminar and Info Fair. Drs. Jeanne Marrazzo and Aadia Rana will speak on "Pathway to Achieving the 90-90-90 Goal in Alabama." Community partners in the 90-90-90 Project will have booths with information.

Mark your calendars for merriment! The Department of Medicine Holiday Party will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, at the National Alumni Society House.
