Exciting data emerged this week from Vertex Pharmaceuticals that clearly indicate a three-drug CFTR modulator regimen can be highly effective for up to 90 percent of CF patients. Pulmonary faculty Steve Rowe, MD, MSPH, and Marty Solomon, MD, have overseen the Phase I and Phase II trials at UAB. Read more about the implications of this research for CF patients.
Two General Internal Medicine faculty members have earned 2017 Kreisberg Awards for Faculty Development: Peter Phan, MD, and Leah Leisch, MD. The awards were established in 2012 in honor of esteemed UAB endocrinologist Robert A. Kreisberg, MD, MACP, one of the Department’s most legendary clinician-educators. With this support, Dr. Phan will participate in the Stanford Faculty Development program, and Dr. Leisch will attend the Berg-Smith Workshop on Motivational Interviewing.
Two physicians from the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine were recently designated as members of the inaugural class of Distinguished CHEST Educators by the American College of Chest Physicians. Joao de Andrade, MD, and Keith Wille, MD, earned this new distinction for maintaining a large volume of high-quality CHEST education delivery and design over the prior three years and participating in formal faculty development in CHEST or other programs. The new designees will be honored at the CHEST 2017 Annual Meeting this fall.
Tomasz Szul, PhD (Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has received an American Lung Association Biomedical Research Grant entitled “Effects of E-Cigarette Derived Reactive Aldehydes on Airway Inflammation.” Dr. Szul is mentored by Professor Amit Gaggar, MD.
