Noha Sharafeldin, PhD (Instructor, Hematology and Oncology) was awarded the Amy Strelzer Manasevit Research Program for the Study of Post-Transplant Complications grant funded by the Be the Match Foundation. With this grant, Dr. Sharafeldin plans to study the impact of cognitive training for patients after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Kudos, Dr. Sharafeldin!
More Good News for February 6, 2019
The Division of Cardiovascular Disease celebrated National Wear Red Day last Friday to raise awareness for the number one health problem that affects women – heart disease. On this day, women are encouraged to find out their five most important health numbers: total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index. By knowing these numbers women can find out their risks for developing heart disease and take measures to prevent it.
Michael Allon, MD (Professor, Nephrology) and colleagues have found that they can predict successful arteriovenous fistula maturation in kidney dialysis patients through ultrasound imaging. An arteriovenous fistula is a surgical connection between at artery and a vein that helps blood flow to the dialysis machine during hemodialysis. By predicting fistula maturation, clinicians can determine whether patients are prepared for initial dialysis.
Kellie Flood, MD (Associate Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care) has been named the American Geriatrics Society 2019 Clinician of the Year. This prestigious award recognizes a clinician who has made outstanding contributions to the delivery of quality health care to older people, who communicates well with patients and their families, and who makes generous contributions to community health care efforts. She will receive the award at the AGS conference in May. Congrats, Dr. Flood!
Vera Bittner, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) and colleagues have demonstrated that weight cycling was associated with a lower rate of adverse cardiovascular outcomes in women with suspected ischemia, such as stroke, heart attack, and heart failure. The study builds on the work of William Rogers, MD (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) who was the principal investigator of the Women’s Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) study in the late 1990s.
Paramita Pati, PhD (Postdoc Fellow, Nephrology) received the Caroline tum Suden/Frances Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award from the American Physiological Society. This award provides funds for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to attend and participate fully in the Experimental Biology meeting. Congratulations, Dr. Pati!
Robert Smola, MD (Assistant Professor, General Internal Medicine) joined our faculty in 2018 after completing a year as Chief Medical Resident at UAB. He works at the Birmingham VAMC as Hospitalist, working with Dr. Andrew Sellers, and the internal medicine teaching service at University Hospital. His interests in medical education include procedural training, diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound, simulation facilitation, and physical diagnosis.
The UAB Medicine Diversity Fair was held on January 25, 2019, bringing together faculty, staff, and trainees to celebrate the dynamic people who work together to take care of patients, make exciting discoveries and train the next generation of academic medical professionals. Representatives from the Geriatrics, Endocrinology, GI, Nephrology, and Preventive Medicine Divisions all participated in the annual food fair with samples of cuisine from all around the world, and plenty of music and fellowship to honor the many different heritages that make up the School of Medicine.
