Phillip D. Smith, M.D., Professor in the UAB Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Paul Harris, M.D., Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, have established the Foundation for Latin American Scientists. The organization provides early-career, Chilean scientists a two-year fellowship in immunology, molecular biology, immunology or microbiology at UAB, Stanford, University of California (UC) San Francisco, UC Berkeley and UC Davis to enhance their ability to establish an independent research program upon return to their home university in Chile.

Startup company TIXiMED, Inc., led by Anatha Shalev, M.D., (Professor, EDM) has obtained clearance from the US FDA to begin clinical trials for TIX100, a novel oral Type 1 diabetes drug based on decades of Dr. Shalev's research.
