Mark Dransfield, MD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine) will lead the UAB arm of a multi-site study to explore how vaping, environment and lifestyle impact long-term lung health in millennials. Findings from the study will arm doctors with information to recognize respiratory problems early and intervene before patients develop chronic lung disease.

Ashita Tolwani, M.D. (Professor, Nephrology) has established the Tolwani Innovation Fund in Nephrology to support investigators and researchers as they create kidney-related therapeutic products. Dr. Tolwani established the fund using royalties from an anticoagulant solution she developed at UAB in 2004. Great work, Dr. Tolwani!
Shawn Galin, PhD (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care) has been invited to give an oral presentation on enhancing medical student competencies in transgender healthcare at 2019 Learn Serve Lead, the AAMC Annual Meeting in November.
Sumanth Prabhu, MD (Professor and Director, Cardiovascular Disease) and Martin Young, DPhil (Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) have been awarded a $2.3 million grant from the NHLBI to study macrophage circadian rhythms in heart failure. These findings will uncover new mechanisms underlying circadian biology, immune cell function and cardiac remodeling and identify a novel approach to correcting the molecular clock in heart failure.
Mohamed Khass, PhD (Assistant Professor, Immunology and Rheumatology) will receive a $100,000 Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) grant for a second consecutive year for His proposal entitled "The Influence of the Surrogate Light Chain Protein A5 on Bone Health and Arthritis in Aging.” Way to go, Dr. Khass!
