A community-minded group of 15 volunteers from the Division of Hematology and Oncology participated in a morning of service at the Community Foodbank of Central Alabama. They packed 168 boxes of mobile pantry items (4,200 lbs.) that will be distributed throughout the state, packed 420 individual Weekenders BackPack kits (1,680 lbs.) that will go to school-aged kids and their families, and weighed over 1,100 lbs. of sorted donations. That’s 7,000 lbs. of awesome. We salute you, Hem/Onc crew!

Our Nephrology Research and Training Center (NRTC) had another successful renewal this year, marking its 11th anniversary as a University-Wide Interdisciplinary Research Center. These added funds will allow the researchers to explore the ways a high salt diet can also lead to Alzheimer's Disease-related dysfunction. We look forward to hearing what you learn, Dr. Pollock!

Providing an extra layer of comfort and care is the hallmark of palliative medicine, and there are often times when our palliative team has a chance to go even further to help grant a dying wish. Through an expertly choreographed team effort of chaplains, nurses, physicians, and other personnel, Thomas Roberts was baptized by immersion in the Spain Rehabilitation Center pool last month, with his family gathered as witnesses.

Three faculty projects were recently funded through an AMC21 initiative giving NIH-funded investigators incentive to submit a second R01. The projects, are eligible for $50,000 per year for a period of up to two years, pending appropriate progress and achieving benchmarks. Three cheers!
