UAB Medical Director of Telemedicine Eric Wallace, MD (Associate Professor, Nephrology)
The UAB Telehealth Program, directed by Eric Wallace, MD (Associate Professor, Nephrology) has received $500,000 in a grant by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to fund telehealth equipment in 9 rural hospitals and 10 public health departments in Alabama, increasing access to care across the state in areas that need it. 

More Good News for January 31, 2018

Two of the Department’s outstanding junior faculty, Kelly Hyndman, PhD (Assistant Professor, Nephrology), and Jodie Dionne-Odom, MD (Assistant Professor, Infectious Diseases) were named as 2018 James A. Pittman, Jr., MD Scholars. Named for the late James A. Pittman, M.D., longtime dean of the School of Medicine, faculty are nominated based on their research achievements and their potential for continued discovery in the basic or clinical sciences.

Congratulations to Kirk Habegger, PhD, (Assistant Professor, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism) who was awarded the 2018 Bio-Serv Award in Experimental Animal Nutrition from the American Society for Nutrition. The award is given for meritorious research in nutrition accomplished by an investigator with 10 years of postgraduate training. The award will be presented at Nutrition 2018, the American Society for Nutrition’s new flagship meeting in June.

Tonja Meadows, Nurse Research Manager (Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine) has the distinction on being honored as the Department’s January Employee of the Month! Tonja’s impeccable work ethic, strong moral compass, and devotion to patients means there are no impossible tasks and nothing she cannot make happen. She was recognized at a reception on Monday, January 29.

Congratulations to Noha Sharafeldin, MD, PhD, MSc (Instructor, Hematology & Oncology), on the recent publication of her first-author paper in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Her work highlights the results of a prospective study of cognitive functioning in hematopoeitic cell transplant patients.

Next week’s Medical Grand Rounds will feature Patrice Delafontaine, MD (Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson Dean, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology, University of Missouri) presenting, “Angiotensin II, Skeletal Muscle Wasting and Chronic Disease,” at noon on Wednesday, February 7, in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.

  • The Department of Medicine's Women in Medicine Series kicks off 2018 with a discussion on "Confronting Bias in the Workplace" presented by Drs. Lisa Willett and Jori May. The talk will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 1, in the Boshell Diabetes Building, Room 334.
