The Department is delighted to announce a first-of-its-kind clinic at UAB for the evaluation and management of patients with severe asthma and airway hyper-reactivity. Pulmonologists Drs. Jennifer Trevor, Miranda Curtiss, and Ravi Virdi will see patients on Thursday afternoon in TKS. In addition to traditional inhalers and medications, Drs Trevor and Curtiss will also evaluate patients for novel biologic agents and enrollment in clinical trials, and Dr. Virdi will assess patients for bronchial thermoplasty.

 

More Good News for January 22, 2020

The Department of Medicine is extremely grateful for continued generosity of the Anderson family, a vital philanthropic partner in many areas here at UAB including the Division of Nephrology. Thanks to their visionary investment, the division will be able to create an endowed professorship as well as make strategic investments in research and recruitment.

Major announcement this morning from UAB Medicine!

We are entering into an alliance with Ascension St. Vincent’s that will increase access to high-quality, innovative medical care through multiple outlets and health programs.

Our cardiology fellows presented award-winning research at the winter meeting of the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. Post-doctoral fellow Vibhu Parcha won first place for his poster on the incidence and implications of atrial fibrillation/flutter in hypertension. Two other UAB fellows tied for second place: Sudeep Aryal and Stephen Clarkson. Hats off to these investigators for their work!

The DOM is delighted to report that our new cancer clinic that just launched in November is already making a difference for our patients. Providers Dr. Arnab Basu, Dr. Aparna Hegde, Keri Mclendon, and Kaci Weaver, have expanded access that helps us see patients faster and hastens them on the road to treatment.

Kudos to Dr. Paul Sanders (Professor, Nephrology) for his selection as SOM Featured Discovery. His research on how immunoglobulin light chains generate pro-inflammatory and profibrotic kidney injury was published in JCI Insight. Keep up the great work, Dr. Sanders!

James Cimino, MD (Professor and Director, Informatics Institute) has been invited to serve on the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics--the public advisory body to the Secretary of Health and Human Services for health data, statistics, privacy, and national health information policy and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Kudos on this prestigious appointment, Dr. Cimino!

The Division of Hematology and Oncology welcomes a new Assistant Professor to UAB: Joy Ogunsile, MD. Dr. Ogunsile joins UAB from Johns Hopkins University, where she completed her fellowship in Hematology. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke, then served as a Research Assistant at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. She received her M.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and her residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics from Vanderbilt University Hospital. Dr. Ogunsile’s clinical interests are in the care of patients with sickle cell disease and non-malignant hematological disorders.

Calling all cooks! The annual UAB Medicine Diversity Fair will be held on Friday, January 31, 2020, in the North Pavilion Second Floor Atrium from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The Department is aiming for the blue ribbon this year, after two successive #2 showings. Contact Anita Estis by COB, Wednesday, January 22, 2020, with your participation plans so we can make sure we have enough tables for the event.

Next week instead of Medical Grand Rounds, Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., FACS (Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean) will present the “State of the School” at noon on Wednesday, January 29, in the Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
