L to R: UAB pharmacist Dr. Rajesh Speer, nephrologist Dr. Ashita Tolwani and UAB research nurse Brenda Stofan, RN.Ashita Tolwani, MD (Professor, Nephrology) has established the Tolwani Innovation Fund in Nephrology that will support investigators in their pursuit of product development and innovation for kidney-related diseases. This fund was inspired by Dr. Tolwani's experience developing an anticoagulant solution that can be safely administered to patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy in the ICU. The solution is now patented, and the Division hopes to spur similar innovation with this fund.
More Good News for January 16, 2019
Edwin Blalock, PhD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) and Amit Gaggar, MD, PhD (Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) published their findings on a pathogenic entity that is a fundamental link between chronic inflammation and tissue destruction in the lungs of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Teri Bryan, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine) has been named Deputy Associate Chief of Staff at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. She will be working alongside Andrew Sellers, MD, to make operational improvements to provide even better care at BVAMC. She will also be working on consult management and access. Congratulations, Dr. Bryan!
Crystal Farrington, MD (Assistant Professor, Nephrology) will serve as the medical director of the new dialysis unit at Fresenius Kidney Care in Gadsden. Dr. Farrington is finishing up her Interventional Nephrology Fellowship at UAB, and we are excited that she will be expanding our dialysis care to the Gadsden community!
Jason Morris, MD (Associate Professor, General Internal Medicine) first authored a JGME article on how to be successful during a 10-year accreditation site visit. He stated, along with co-authors Brandy Freiger, C-TAGME, Tammy Pickens, C-TAGME, and Lisa Willet, MD, MACM, that to survive your site visit your program must plan in advance, prepare and practice.
Lynn T. Matthews, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases) joined our faculty from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital on January 1. Dr. Matthews is an extraordinary clinician-researcher who has developed transmission prevention strategies for HIV-affected men and women who want to have children. She has more than 10 years of experience with African populations, with numerous publications on the subject of HIV and reproductive health to her credit. We look forward to the ways she will expand our clinical and research impact in infectious diseases. Welcome aboard, Dr. Matthews!
