Yvonne Dennis and Deborah Nummy are celebrating 60 years of managing Type 1 Diabetes. Over the last six decades, treatment for Type 1 Diabetes looks a lot different than it did back then, however, strides in disease management, insulin technology and public knowledge has helped dramatically change the way diabetes can be treated. It has saved the lives of patients like Yvonne and Deborah, thanks to the care provided by Amy Warriner, MD (Associate Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) and other physicians in the division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. More Good News for February 13, 2019
The Department of Medicine is proud to announce the new Clinical Research Enterprise (CRE). The CRE will provide research support and management of clinical research studies across multiple divisions in the department including Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology. The main goal of the CRE is to ensure that studies, investigators, and staff in the DOM have the necessary resources needed for the success of their research. Dr. Cynthia Joiner (Assistant Vice Chair for Research, Department of Medicine) and Patrick Frazier (Nurse Research Manager, Department of Medicine) will supervise the enterprise.
Ronadip Banerjee, MD (Assistant Professor, Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism) received a Junior Faculty Development Award from the American Diabetes Association. With this award, he plans to study mechanisms of pancreatic beta-cell adaptation during pregnancy. Congrats, Dr. Banerjee!
Sudeep Aryal, MD (Fellow, Cardiovascular Disease) and Navkaranbir Bajaj, MD, MPH (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) received a one-year grant, “Feasibility and Accuracy of hybrid Magnetic resonance and Positron Emission Tomography with 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose in diagnosing cardiac sarcoidosis” from CCTS. This collaborative grant will explore the feasibility and establish the diagnostic accuracy of Hybrid PET/MRI technology against PET and MRI.
Alex Boles, MBA has been appointed as the new division administrator for the UAB Division of Cardiovascular Disease effective March 1, 2019. A proud native of Huntsville, Alex earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UAB. He has been a full-time employee at UAB since March 2002, holding various financial, business and human resources roles. Since 2012, he has served as the Administrator for Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology. Welcome to the DOM, Alex!
Mike Wells, MD (Associate Professor, Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care) and one of his patients, Rhonda Schaefer, participated in the Regions Superhero 5K to raise awareness for her rare disease, Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency, or AATD can cause liver and lung disease, which makes it difficult to breathe. Dr. Wells was inspired by her dedication to participate in the race so he decided to run alongside her.
Faculty members in the Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care participated in the Mercedes Marathon Relay last weekend. Drs. Lucas McElwain, Alayne Markland, Stephanie McSweeney, Caroline Harada, Katrina Booth and team captain, Marianthe Grammas, were on “Team Silver Sneakers” that placed 15th overall out of 97 teams. This was their fifth year to enter as a team. Keep up the good work!
Joanna M. Joly, MD (Assistant Professor, Division of Cardiovascular Disease) is returning to UAB Hospital and the Birmingham VA after completing her advanced heart disease fellowship at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. Her clinical passion is caring for patients with debilitating heart failure and pulmonary hypertension, and she has a special interest in mechanical circulatory support and transplant cardiology. She believes that advancing this field requires novel and responsible approaches to both research and education and is excited to work toward this goal alongside an inspiring group of colleagues.
