Last week, UAB Medicine and the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted the 2024 UAB Lung Cancer Update. Healthcare professionals from across the country attended the two-day event to learn about the latest advances in lung cancer care through lectures, panel discussions, and patient testimonials. Faculty from UAB Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine shared updates on innovative therapies, clinical trials, and insights into the future of care. Kudos to all who helped make the event a success.

Pollock Receives 2024 Catalyst for Mission Advancement Award
The local chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation named Jennifer Pollock, Ph.D., professor in the Division of Nephrology, the 2024 Catalyst for Mission Advancement Awardee for her contributions to the Foundation and impact on improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Congrats, Dr. Pollock!
Khoury Studies Effect of Dato-DXD in Early-Stage Breast Cancer
Katia Khoury, M.D., assistant professor in the UAB Division of Hematology and Oncology, and colleagues were published in Nature Medicine for their Phase 2 I-SPY 2.2 trial investigating the effects of Datopotamab-deruxtecan in early-stage breast cancer. The study showed promising results in hormone receptor-negative tumors, suggesting potential in combination therapies.
2024 CCTS Pilot Awardees
Emmy Bell, M.D., MSPH, associate professor in the Division of Nephrology, and Peter Morris, M.D., professor in the Division of PACCM, are recipients of the 2024 CCTS Pilot Awards. The awards support projects aimed at addressing systemic barriers in translational science to improve human health and healthcare delivery.
ID Team Addresses UTI Care in JAMA Network Open
Infectious Diseases faculty Drs. Daniela de Lima Corvino, Molly Fleece, and Rachael Lee contributed to a consensus statement published in JAMA Network Open. The statement addresses clinical guidelines and the gap between evidence and recommendations for diagnosing and managing urinary tract infections.
Research Spotlight: Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month
Professors Bassel El-Rayes, M.D., director of the Division of Hematology & Oncology, and Harrison Kim, Ph.D., MBA, of the Department of Radiology, received an R01 grant to study whether the UAB-developed Point-of-Care Portable Perfusion Phantom can improve precision of blood flow measurements in tumors after chemotherapy treatment for borderline-resectable pancreatic cancer.
