More Good News for November 7, 2018

Two researchers from the Division of Preventive Medicine have edited a special supplement in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) that reports the outcomes of 14 studies on African-American men's health disparities. Professor James Shikany, DrPH, PA-C, and Assistant Professor Yu-Mei Schoenberger, PhD, worked with SOM Dean Selwyn Vickers, MD, to publish the findings made possible by the Center for Healthy African American Men through Partnerships (CHAAMPS). Read the article.

The Department is delighted that Rodney Tucker, MD, MMM (Professor, Gerontology, Geriatrics, and Palliative Care) has been elected to serve as President-Elect of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Tucker is the first physician from UAB to hold this important role. The purpose of the Academy is to improve the care of patients with life-threatening or serious conditions through the advancement of hospice and palliative medicine. Congratulations, Dr. Tucker!

Jim Cimino, MD, and Amy Wang, MD, MBI, have been selected as members of the inaugural fellowship class of the American Medical Informatics Association. Fellowship recognizes AMIA members who apply informatics skills and knowledge towards the goals of enhanced personal and population health, improved organizational performance and learning, and individual empowerment in their health, care, and research.

Marc Cribbs, MD (Assistant Professor, Cardiovascular Disease) was selected from a highly competitive group of candidates to participate in the 2018 American College of Cardiology Emerging Faculty Leadership Academy. Under the leadership of Rick Nishimura, MD, MACC, and Patrick T. O’Gara, MD, MACC, the Emerging Faculty program promotes the development of leadership and educator skills for early career clinicians. Kudos, Dr. Cribbs!

Parks Rx, a project of the Birmingham REACH for Better Health coalition received a national “Shaping How We Invest for Tomorrow” award for its innovative program promoting exercise as medicine. REACH principle investigator Mona Fouad, MD, MPH (Professor and Director, Preventive Medicine) leads the program's efforts to reduce health disparities in underserved communities.

Congratulations to our November Employee of the Month, Sylvia Peral (Program Manager, Preventive Medicine). Sylvia's primary responsibility is evaluating large multi-site partnerships and conducting qualitative interviews. She always projects a warm, cheerful attitude and lifts the spirits of those around her. Think of others you know and nominate them for this distinction.
