More Good News for June 10, 2020

Jeanne Marrazzo, MD (Professor and Director, Infectious Diseases) has been elected to the ABIM Board of Trustees. The Foundation seeks to develop and implement projects to advance the core values of medical professionalism as a force to improve the quality of health care. Kudos, Dr. Marrazzo!

Dana Rizk, MD (Professor, Nephrology) has been recognized for her work in IgA Nephropathy, the most common form of an inflammatory kidney disease. Her study validated a hypothesis of how the disease progresses by using a nanobody to confirm the presence of a molecule that was previously undetectable with standard tests. 

Mike Mugavero, MD, MHSc (Professor, Infectious Diseases) has received the 2020 John Eisenberg Excellence in Mentorship Award. The award is presented in honor of Dr. John Eisenberg, an international leader in quality improvement. Congrats on this well-deserved recognition, Dr. Mugavero!

Leslie Avant, MD (PGY-3) and geriatrician colleagues Drs. Carolyn Kezar and Keith Swetz have published a case discussion examining the ethical and legal considerations of providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation when limited options for survival or further treatment are available. 

Gabrielle Rocque, MD (Assistant Professor, Hematology & Oncology) has published a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology exploring the relationship between prior treatment time, prior lines of treatment, and survival using a novel visualization technique coupled with statistical analyses. Great work, Dr. Rocque!

Phillip D. Smith, MD (Professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology) was lead editor for the second edition of Principles of Mucosal Immunology. The book presents basic and clinical aspects of the mucosal immune system through contributions from experts, including UAB Drs. Charles Elson, Lesley Smythies, Bruce Julian, Jan Novak, Jiri Mestecky and Phillip Smith.

Lisa Willett, MD (Professor, General Internal Medicine & Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program) and Craig Hoesley, MD (Professor, Infectious Diseases) will present "National Conversations in Medical Education" at Medical Grand Rounds next Wednesday, June 17, at noon, via Zoom. The session will be recorded.
