The annual “Camp Dismukes” retreat was held last weekend in honor of William Dismukes, MD, professor emeritus and director of the Tinsley Harrison Internal Medicine Residency Program from 1981-2002. Coverage was provided for all of the residents and their families so they could enjoy time together at beautiful Oak Mountain State Park.

Two of our residency program alumni, Philip Johnson, MD, PhD (2011) and Mustafa Ahmed, MD (2009) recently won the 2015 Alabama Launchpad Startup Competition. Their HIPAA-compliant software application enables physicians to securely exchange medical images online. Read the UAB story here.

The NIH has awarded $34 million to the UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS). The award more than doubles the CCTS’ previous funding and is one of the largest at UAB. The grant includes funding for 10 annual pre-doctoral training awards, 10 summer training awards, and eight career development awards for senior postdoctoral fellows or faculty-level candidates. In addition, it will enable the CCTS will continue to build major capacities in training, clinical trial implementation, drug discovery, study design and methodology, informatics, pilot investigation, and clinical research services. Congratulations to UAB CCTS Director Robert Kimberly, MD, as well as other dedicated DOM faculty and staff, for their success in earning this important grant.

The 2015 Community Health Innovation Awards (CHIA) is an annual grant competition for organizations in the greater Birmingham area. CHIA supports out-of-the-box approaches to improve education, advance health care, promote safety, and strengthen our most valuable community asset—its people. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 will be awarded to local organizations whose innovative ideas address community health issues. All applicants are required to attend an Innovation Workshop on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

The Department of Medicine held a Strategic Planning Meeting on Friday, August 14. All five Strategic Work Groups (Clinical Care, Education, Research, Culture, and Sustainability) were well represented and have identified high-priority goals for 2015-2016. Stay tuned for more information to be shared in the weeks ahead.  

Sandhya Mudumbi, MD (PGY-3) demonstrated both outstanding clinical skills and professionalism on a recent long call at the VA. Her diligence to follow up subtle abnormalities led to a catheterization identifying multi-vessel coronary disease and an acute thrombus. The patient received three stents and has done well since. Kudos to Dr. Mudumbi for staying with her patient through a long night delivering extraordinary continuity of care.
