Exercise Medicine Journal Club (GBS 746J)
This weekly journal club offered each fall and spring semester is focused on medical rehabilitation that is thematic to target new groups of trainees each semester. Thus far we have offered journal clubs on regenerative rehabilitation; exercise-mediated neurogenesis; molecular mechanisms of various modalities on skeletal muscle atrophy and dysfunction in disease and disability; organ system cross-talk in response to rehabilitation interventions.
Distinguished Lecture Series
Offered on the second Tuesday of each month, October–May, at noon in the Finley Kaul Conference Center. Leaders in exercise and rehabilitation medicine from across the nation join us to present their research. Lunch is provided for trainees and the guest speaker immediately following the seminar presentation. This is an ideal forum for gaining insight into professional development and making valuable connections.
Rehabilitation Research Roundtable
This is a forum we have successfully used to spawn and expand research on exercise biology and rehabilitation into numerous basic and clinical disciplines. The format of this roundtable is a nascent projects discussion forum. All trainees will be required to present on a rotation, discussing their own work in progress and/or exciting new findings recently published in the field. Primary mentors will also be expected to participate regularly. This is considered a critical component of the training experience.
Annual Symposium and Poster Competition (Fall)
All pre- and postdoctoral trainees who are or were previously funded by the T32 program will present research in a combination of poster and oral formats and will compete for travel awards. This will be a very effective means of giving the external advisors a real flavor for the program. Each year the symposium will feature invited external speakers including a keynote speaker–a prominent scientist in the field. Poster and oral presentations by trainees will be judged and awards will be presented.
