Alexander Davis, M.D., has had the opportunity to enhance his studies and skillset as part of the Pediatric/Medical Genetics Program here at UAB. Recently, he took the time to speak about his journey, what UAB has provided for him in his time here, and his plans for the future.
Q: How instrumental has the training that you have received here at UAB been in your journey to becoming a clinical geneticist?
A: I can definitely say that my time at UAB has been immensely formative for me. The clinical experience I’ve had at UAB is world-class and has allowed me to see and care for patients others may only read about on the internet. I’ve grown in my compassion, curiosity, and knowledge beyond what I expected. I am really excited about what the future looks like for me.
Q: What has been the most exciting part about being of the Department of Genetics here at UAB? How has this department helped you overall along your journey?
A: For me, I was excited to learn everything that I could within this department, while also experiencing a stimulation of growth in my time here. The experiences that I’ve gained here have allowed me to see people within this department share their various passions as well as their experiences. I learned very early on that not only are they willing to share information, but they also have a willingness to learn from their peers. The environment for education within this department is wonderful to be a part of.
Q: To this point, what have been some of your favorite times in residency?
A: The relationships I have developed within the Genetics department have truly shaped my experience here for the better. The times I spend with advisers, co-residents, and faculty are often the moments that uplift me in an otherwise strenuous residency.
Q: If an incoming college student was looking to study genetics, what are some of the reasons that they should come here to UAB?
A: The diversity of opportunities, especially within this department, is among the best in the country. The research done in UAB’s genetics labs is fascinating, as we are connected to one of the best academic hospital systems in the country, and the education will prepare college students for a multitude of careers.
Q: What are some of your future goals after your complete your residency at UAB?
A: I hope to start my own residency program so that I can spread the culture of UAB to my home. I’d also love to get involved with gene therapy treatments to provide potentially life-saving medications to severely affected patients.
Q: What will you be doing next after you graduate from UAB?
A: I will be working for the Division of Medical Genetics at the University of Florida in Jacksonville. I’m really excited about the opportunity and look forward to what’s next.
