Designed to accelerate advancements in precision medicine, informatics, and data sciences
In addition to being iconic in its architecture—which will feature a visible-to-all double-helix design—the Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building will increase UAB’s research capacity by 16 percent and help scientists generate an additional $100 million in new grants. UAB will recruit upward of 75 additional investigators and some 350 new support staff to work alongside the talented team of researchers already in place.
Cementing UAB’s place as a leading research institution in genomic and precision medicine
The state of Alabama contributed $50 million in funding via the Public School and College Authority toward construction of the building—the largest-ever investment from the state in a university facility. When combined with support from Jefferson County, and UAB donors, the building represents the power of public/private partnership to drive better health and prosperity for the people of Alabama and beyond.
Updates and Progress
UAB building among Alabama’s first to feature ‘bird safe’ glass
Small dots are etched into the glass, roughly two inches apart. This design allows birds to both see and avoid the glass.
Building Medicine: Updates on Heersink School of Medicine Facilities
The recent progress on this project is undeniable to anyone who has walked up 19th Street recently. In terms of the construction progress, roofing and exterior walls are mostly completed, making way for the building finishes to be installed, with completion expected in December 2024.
State, county, city leaders and donors join UAB to break ground on game-changing new genomics building
UAB broke ground Monday, April 11, 2022, for the new Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building and the Marnix E. Heersink Institute for Biomedical Innovation Conference Center.
Footprint for new genomic medicine building takes shape
The new building will bring together researchers, technology, and staff from UAB’s Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute, Informatics Institute, and Bill L. Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, as well as translational scientists from many different disciplines, cementing UAB’s place as a genomic and precision medicine research powerhouse.
Reflecting on the legacy of Roy R. Kracke Clinical Services Building in the midst of innovative change
To support the advancement of the School of Medicine as a national leader of excellence, several facilities on campus are undergoing renovation or remodeling.
Seeding growth that enhances communities across the state: Gift from the Altec/Styslinger
This facility will accelerate advancements in precision medicine, informatics and data sciences as we gain greater understanding of the roles our genes and the environment play in major human diseases.
