The U.S. Culture & Medical Education Summer Program at UAB is designed to improve proficiency in English; give international students an enhanced United States educational experience, including diagnostic knowledge and provide an understanding of the United States medical system.
Program Overview

Your educational training will consist of taking an Academic English course that focuses on structured practice that includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills with feedback from the instructor for real-time improvement and a modified schedule and content of UAB’s Principles of History Taking, Physical Assessment and Clinical Procedures course.
Program Goals
At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
- Identify the components of the medical history (chief complaint, history of present illness, past medical history, family history, social history and review of systems)
- Identify physical examination techniques for the head, neck, ear, nose, mouth, thorax, heart, peripheral vascular system, breast, abdomen, musculoskeletal system and the neurological system
- Perform minor procedures such as venipuncture and suturing of skin in the simulation lab
Eligibility
Each application will be reviewed by the Admission Committee to identify individuals with strong commitment and aptitude, along with strong academic preparation and professional-leadership potential.
Recommended minimum GPA 3.0 on of 4.0 scale in all previous coursework.
You must take one of the following TOEFL Tests passing with the following minimum scores:
- iBT (internet-based) score of 100 with a minimum of 22 on the speaking section
- Paper-based test score of 600
- Final assessment of a good command of the English language will be determined during the virtual online interview via Zoom

International students who wish to apply for The UAB International Education U.S. Culture & Medical Education Summer Program must download and complete the UAB U.S. Culture & Medical Education Summer Program application and email it, along with the following, to internationalMD@uab.edu. Please send in one PDF.
- Letter of interest stating your purpose/reason of interest in the program
- Letter from your home university approving the course
- Copy of the biographical information page of your passport
Fees
A nonrefundable application fee of $100 is required
Cost per 4-week non-credit rotation is $5,000. This includes tuition, housing and transport to and from the airport (excludes travel to and from the USA). This cost is due upon completion of your application and after successfully completing your virtual online interview via Skype or Zoom.
Payment can be made by a major credit card or wire transfer.

Prospective students may apply at any time during the year; however, students only begin program courses in the summer. For more information, please contact internationalMD@uab.edu.
Applicants should not arrange travel or arrive at UAB until you have received notification to come to UAB by International Education.
