Summer Cancer Research Education Program (SCREP)

Graduate and medical students gain practical skills in hands-on research in our Summer Cancer Research Education Program (SCREP), which is sponsored by the Morehouse School of Medicine/Tuskegee University/O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB Partnership. The SCREP encourages medical and graduate students to choose careers in cancer research in an effort to eliminate the gap in cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality between minorities and the general population. Participants attend seminars, workshops, and mini-courses and undertake an independent research project guided by a mentor. The training culminates with participants presenting their research at the Cancer Research Symposium in late July.
Program Dates: June 3 – July 26, 2024

- Opportunity to work with cancer researchers and scientists
- Mentored research, workshops with leaders from all three partner institutes
- Scholars will receive a stipend of $2,000 per month ($4,000/summer)
- National Cancer Institute-funded program (great addition to scholars' CVs)

Students Must:
We’re accepting applications for these paid internships from graduate and medical students currently enrolled in a masters or doctoral program, or medical school, at MSM, TU, or UAB. Students must be US citizens or permanent residents. Selected students will receive a stipend.
Application Process:
- Complete ALL sections of this application: It is your responsibility to make certain that your application is complete and that all supporting documents (personal statement, transcript(s), resumé /CV, and recommendation letters) are received by March 1, 2024. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
- The following supporting documents should be uploaded into the online application:
- Statement of Intent: Using Microsoft Word or similar program, address the following items in a well-developed and well-written (logically sequenced, grammatically correct, concise) one-page or less typed essay (250 words) that addresses the following:
- Why would like to participate in the Summer Cancer Research Education Program?
- How will this training impact your academic and career goals?
- What qualifications distinguish you from other applicants?
- Current Resumé /CV
- Unofficial Transcripts: Include transcripts for ALL colleges/universities attended.
- Statement of Intent: Using Microsoft Word or similar program, address the following items in a well-developed and well-written (logically sequenced, grammatically correct, concise) one-page or less typed essay (250 words) that addresses the following:
- The following supporting documents should be emailed to mherctraining@uabmc.edu:
- Letters of Recommendation: Request letters of recommendation from two people familiar with your academic and/or research work. Each recommendation should be emailed directly by the person making the recommendation by March 1, 2024. Recommendation should be emailed from the recommender's official email account. At least one letter must be from a faculty member.
