Fellowship Experience

Our program provides interventional nephrology training in a collaborative environment, to include hemodialysis and peritoneal catheter placement. We have specialty clinics across our medical campus, which is anchored by our 1,200 bed inpatient center UAB Hospital—the eighth largest public hospital in the nation. The hospital is in close proximity to the Birmingham VA Medical Center, UAB Hospital Highlands campus, The Kirklin Clinic, and Children's Hospital of Alabama where fellows also train.

Patients come from all over the state to take advantage of our life-changing care, offering a diverse population and breadth of clinical learning opportunities. We approach medicine in a multi-disciplinary modality across a broad variety of nephrology-related conditions through mandatory and elective rotations. We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service.

Clinical Rotations

Fellows can choose elective rotations in various subspecialty clinics to expand their clinical exposure. These rotations focus on evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients with vascular access issues, developing differential diagnoses, and implementing treatment plans. Fellows also learn about vascular access techniques for hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal biopsies, as well as educating patients and obtaining informed consent. The service, located on the 6th floor of the North Pavilion building, includes a Nephrology attending, an Interventional Radiology attending, and a monthly rotating Nephrology fellow.

The fellow evaluates patients for dialysis before Interventional Nephrology procedures at the Heart Vascular Center. They serve as the primary or secondary operator for these procedures, oversee renal biopsies for outpatients and inpatients, and monitor patients post-procedure until discharge. In their second and third years, fellows collaborate with Interventional Radiology staff, enhancing their interdisciplinary skills.

Teaching Conferences

Our training program is designed to offer fellows substantial teaching opportunities. Fellows are expected to educate medical students and residents, and they are encouraged to attend various multidisciplinary conferences. These conferences include the Nephrology Research and Training Center Conference, the Vascular Access for Hemodialysis Conference, the Interventional Radiology Conference, the Morbidity and Mortality Report Conference, the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, and the General Nephrology Fellows Noon Conference. Additionally, fellows are encouraged to present lectures to the interventional section (radiology and nephrology) during scheduled lecture times.

Research Training

Research is an essential part of our training program, aiming to teach fellows sound methodology in designing and performing research studies, correct interpretation and synthesis of research data, development of work suitable for presentation at national scientific meetings and publication in peer-reviewed journals, and building a foundation for extramural funding applications for those interested in academic careers. Research may be in clinical or basic science projects depending on fellow interests. Presentation of their research findings at regional or national scientific meetings is strongly encouraged.
