The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is thrilled to welcome its newest associate professor of Neurology, Scott A. Marshall Jr., M.D.
Prior to joining UAB, Marshall's career has been marked by dedication and exemplary service. He served most recently as a Staff Neurointensivist and Vascular Neurologist at Intermountain Medical Center, part of Intermountain Health, in Murray, Utah. His tenure at Intermountain allowed him to treat diverse patient populations and refine his critical care and vascular neurology expertise.
He obtained his medical degree with honors from St. George’s University School of Medicine in 2002. He completed a year as a Transitional Intern at Harbor Hospital and a year of Physical Medicine at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH).
From the NRH, Marshall entered active duty with the U.S. Army and began training at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center. After residency, he completed a fellowship in Neurosciences Critical Care with Vascular Neurology Certification at Johns Hopkins University. Scott was then deployed to support Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his combat service.
After OEF, Marshall began work at the Military’s only Level One Trauma Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He helped develop and oversee the military’s first Neurosciences ICU and served as the initial medical director. During this time, he became an adjunct staff member at the University of Utah in Neurocritical Care. Marshall completed active duty and began work with Intermountain Health in Salt Lake City as a Neurointensivist and Vascular Neurologist, where he served for nine years.
Marshall will begin his work for UAB with the Neurosciences ICU and Stroke Service. Marshall is interested in studying systems of care involving telemedicine in critically ill patients and in preventing seizures in patients with severe neurologic brain injury. His areas of expertise encompass various aspects of neurology, focusing on neurointensive care and vascular neurology. His combined knowledge and experience make him uniquely suited to contribute to both the Department of Neurology and the Department of Anesthesia at UAB.
“Growing up in Alabama, I have always associated the Medical Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with regional and national excellence in healthcare,” says Marshall. “It is a humbling honor to be now able to participate in the care of patients at this respected intuition. Medical training, military service, and the first part of a career led me to other regions of the country, but my wife and I and our three children are ecstatic to be home in Birmingham.”
