University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery Human Resources Generalist Cassandra DeGraffenried, MSHRM, recently graduated from the UAB Emerging Leaders Series (ELS) program.
The ELS program, presented by the Heersink School of Medicine Leadership Development Office, was developed specifically for leaders at a manager, director or similar level. It provides training opportunities that empower participants to grow into better, more prepared future leaders.
As a member of the program’s first cohort, DeGraffenried participated in three sessions rooted around topics that are applicable across a variety of professional roles at UAB.
Program participants explored ways to develop their own personal “leadership lens,” and discussed the importance of networking and understanding negotiation strategies. DeGraffenried and her peers also learned how to navigate their professional aspirations and about the importance of leveraging mentorships.
“I learned that adaptability and a commitment to personal growth are critical to my success as a leader,” said DeGraffenried. “I also learned a great deal from other cohorts and was able to take away several great tools and strategies to incorporate into my daily role as an HR professional in the Department of Neurosurgery.”
