The Department of Neurosurgery has been awarded the opportunity to start a new, one-year, Radiosurgery Fellowship.

This program is highly unique as there are only a few programs of its kind across the U.S. The program is sponsored by Varian Medical Systems, a radiation oncology treatment and software developer, and administered by the Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (NREF).

James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery James Markert, M.D., MPH, Professor Barton Guthrie, M.D., and Department of Radiation Oncology Professor John Fiveash, M.D., will serve as co-directors of the program. The Fellowship is based at the UAB Hospital, the Kirklin Clinic, and the UAB Radiation Oncology Facility. Pediatric activity is performed at Children’s Hospital of Alabama (COA).

The fellow will support the state-of-the-art linear, accelerator-based Radiosurgery service managed in close collaboration by innovative and well-published Neurosurgery and Radiation Therapy faculty. The service performed over 360 cranial and spine radiosurgical procedures in 2018 for neoplastic (malignant and benign histologies) and vascular lesions, as well as other indications (over 4,000 since 1996).

Additionally, the fellow will attend two weekly conferences for general neurosurgery, and separate weekly subspecialty conferences in the areas of neuro-oncology, radiosurgery and vascular neurosurgery, all of which involve discussion of patient treatment options including but not limited to radiosurgery.

While concentrating on radiosurgery, the fellow will assume a faculty instructor position with the Department of Neurosurgery. In addition to the fellow’s focus on radiosurgery training, Neurosurgery will offer an opportunity to provide general neurosurgical care through its clinics and general neurosurgical call for qualified fellows who are graduates of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) training program. The fellow will supervise the clinical and surgical activities of the core residents and participate in their didactic education as well.
