The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery is pleased to welcome two new team members, Callan Burns, PA-C, and Shunsuke Tsuzuki.
Burns transitions to the department from UAB’s cardiovascular surgery acute care team, where he worked as a physician assistant (PA) for the past three and a half years. Originally from Tuscaloosa, Ala., Bunn moved to Birmingham in 2018 to attend PA school at at UAB.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Bunn serves as a PA in the Alabama Army National Guard and is passionate about reading, exercising, playing pool, traveling and spending time with family. A self-proclaimed space enthusiast, he is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration at UAB and is set to graduate this December.
Tsuzuki joins the department as a visiting scientist from Tokyo Women’s Medical University in Japan. He will conduct research in the laboratory of Satoru Osuka, M.D., Ph.D.
With nearly 15 years of experience in surgery and clinical research on malignant brain tumors, particularly gliomas, Tsuzuki’s work has focused on innovative treatments for intractable malignant gliomas.
Eager to study abroad and expand his expertise in basic research and novel therapeutic approaches, Tsuzuki aims to bridge his findings to future drug discoveries. In his free time, Tsuzuki enjoys watching tennis, soccer and baseball.
