On Sept. 3, 2024, Jasmine Thum, M.D., will join the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery as an assistant professor.
Thum, an Austin, Texas, native, joins the department from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she recently completed a neurosurgical fellowship.
Before training at UCSF, Thum completed her neurosurgical residency at the University of California, Los Angeles David Geffen School of Medicine and earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School.
In her role, Thum will serve as a surgeon-scientist, specializing in functional neurosurgery and primarily performing epilepsy, deep brain stimulation (DBS) and peripheral nerve cases.
Throughout her training, Thum has published several peer-reviewed papers, presented at national and international conferences and collaborated with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, neuroscientists and clinicians. She is committed to enhancing medical student and resident education in neurosurgery through mentoring, teaching and leadership roles.
“I have no doubt that Dr. Thum will be an impactful addition to our department and am thrilled to have her on our team.” says James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery and Department of Neurosurgery Professor James Markert, M.D., MPH. “This is an exciting time of growth for department.”
