The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery welcomes Alyssa Winebrenner, CRNP, and Archana Shashidhar Mysore, Ph.D.
Winebrenner (pictured left) joins the department as an advanced practice provider supporting James Markert, M.D., MPH, James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery and Department of Neurosurgery professor.
For the last two years, Winebrenner has worked in the Division of Cerebrovascular Disease within the Department of Neurology. Before moving to Birmingham, Alabama, Winebrenner specialized in general neurology in Lexington, Kentucky.
Winebrenner and her husband have an almost 2-year-old son and are expecting their second son in March. In her free time, Winebrenner enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and boating. She is also an avid reader when she finds the time to relax.
Mysore (pictured right) joins the department as a postdoctoral fellow in the research lab of Associate Professor of Neurosurgery Nicole Bentley, M.D.
In August 2024, Mysore earned her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Arizona State University (ASU).
Mysore’s research has primarily focused on understanding the neuroscientific basis of human cognitive control by using biomedical engineering tools such as electroencephalography (EEG) and low-intensity transcranial-focused ultrasound stimulation (tFUS) for neuromodulation.
During her time at ASU, Mysore published two peer-reviewed articles and presented posters at six conferences, including the Society of Neuroscience annual meetings and the Focused Ultrasound Neuromodulation Conference.
Teaching and mentorship have been central to Mysore’s professional journey, and she was awarded the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) scholarship during her time at ASU. During the EOP scholarship program, Mysore developed a teaching pedagogy that stimulated students’ thought processes regarding sustainable practices in engineering applications and design. Eventually, this teaching pedagogy was selected to be presented as part of an EOP workshop at the 2024 American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Meeting.
Through academic research projects, she mentored four graduate students and seven undergraduate students, three of whom were awarded a competitive National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates fellowship.
She also received the ASU Serving University Needs award for encouraging neuroscience research among high school students and undergraduate admission recruiters through lab tours.
Outside of work, Mysore enjoys hiking with her dog and exploring different kinds of music.
