The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery James Garber Galbraith Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery James Markert, M.D., MPH, and Charles A. and Patsy W. Collat Endowed Professor of Neurosurgery, Mark Hadley, M.D., presented at the 2023 Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023.  
 
Markert and Hadley were featured faculty at the, “Swimming with the Sharks: Thriving in the Neurosurgery Match and Residency,” during the “GE Bundle” symposium. 
 
This CNS course, tailored for residents, medical students and foreign medical graduates, was created to shed light on the insights gained from the experiences of renowned faculty members with the objective of fostering resilience through shared knowledge from those who have traveled similar paths.
 
The course included breakout sessions allowing medical students to prepare for interviews and residents to receive guidance on job searches from esteemed thought leaders in the field.
 
During the breakout sessions, Markert and Hadley shared their best advice with their respective small groups, providing sought-after insights into thriving in a career in neurosurgery.
