UAB Neurosurgery faculty and residents (2023)The neurosurgery service line at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been recognized once again as one of the top neurosurgery providers in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its 2024-2025 Best Hospital rankings.

In the latest rankings, released on July 16, 2024, UAB secured the No. 42 spot among 1,227 evaluated hospitals within the neurology/neurosurgery specialty. In the area of stroke care, UAB was rated as high-performing – the highest classification awarded by U.S. News.

U.S. News’s assessment encompassed several key areas, including care for brain hemorrhage, central nervous system conditions, spinal disorders, degenerative nervous system diagnoses, care for stroke, seizures and more.

UAB's performance in these critical areas underscores its reputation as a leader in neurosurgical care.

Rankings are derived from a comprehensive analysis of various data categories, including patient survival rates, volume of high-risk patients, patient experience, nurse staffing levels, and the availability of advanced clinical technologies. Hospitals are then scored and the top 50 nationally ranked, with the top 10% within each specialty designated as high performing.

The annual rankings, now in their third decade, aim to assist patients and healthcare providers in making informed decisions about where to seek treatment for complex health conditions or routine elective procedures. The rankings consider a variety of patient-centric factors, such as overall patient experience and hospital staffing levels, providing a comprehensive overview of hospital performance.
